KOMODO NATIONAL PARK

Dramatic island peaks cloaked in savannah grasses, living dragons, and scintillating blue seas with rich coral reefs.

Stretching east from Bali lie the islands of Lombok, Sumbawa and Flores. Located just off the coast of Flores, Komodo National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

This is one of the most sought-after cruising grounds in Indonesia - and for good reason. Komodo National Park is known for its endemic Komodo dragons, respected by locals, who believe they descend from a dragon princess.

With more than 1,000 types of fish and 260 types of coral, Komodo National Park's tropical waters are one of the most species-rich environments on earth.

Around 60% of Komodo's famously exciting dive sites are also suitable for snorkelling with shallow, fringing reefs. From Manta rays and schooling trevallies to pygmy seahorses, frogfish and technicolour nudibranchs, these reefs have it all. There's even the occasional whale shark (particularly on itineraries that take in the north coast of Sumbawa).

Surfers can explore the surrounding islands of Lombok, Sumbawa, Sumba and Rote for perfect waves on a longer one-way itinerary.

EXPLORE THE LAND OF DRAGONS AT YOUR OWN PACE

On an expeditionary voyage in Indonesia in 1854, naturalist Alfred Wallace observed that between the islands of Bali and Lombok, which are separated by a short stretch of water, there is a significant change in flora and fauna. This channel is now known as the Wallace Line and marks a zone where Asian wildlife meets Australasian wildlife.

Rolling hills and mangroves in the north of Komodo National Park give way to craggy mountainous terrain in the central region, while in the south, Horseshoe Bay is about as close as you can get to Jurassic Park with cliffs shrouded in cloud and the force of the Pacific Ocean pounding the coast outside the cove.
