The Wall Street Journal aboard Dunia Baru

Ultimate Indonesian Yachts has featured in:

The Wall Street Journal came aboard Dunia Baru to follow the old spice route: the passage through the Spice Islands of Maluku, where nutmeg and cloves once grew nowhere else in the world.

Their film traces the journey over clear coral reefs, past the ruins of Dutch colonial forts and into the nutmeg groves that still shade the islands. Villages there continue to harvest the spice as their families have for centuries. It is a voyage of history as much as of water, and one the archipelago rarely shows to visitors.

Dunia Baru was a natural choice for it. Her name means “new world” in Indonesian, and she was built over eight years by Konjo master builders, in teak and ironwood shaped by hand. The care shows in the smallest details: individually carved wooden hinges, a steering wheel made by hand, a master suite that spans the full width of the yacht, with windows on three sides and a private terrace at the stern.

She has been in our collections since her launch. Through the year she follows the seasons, sailing Komodo from May to October and Raja Ampat from November to April. Between them, she makes the crossing through the Spice Islands and on into West Papua, the same waters the Journal came to see.

Designed with families in mind, Dunia Baru carries a waterslide, a sea pool, a glass-bottomed kayak and a sailing dinghy, along with a gym, hot and cold plunge pools and two masseuses. She is a yacht for children and adults alike, in a part of Indonesia that still feels undiscovered.
